Scotland's Sloppy Display Results In 3-1 Friendly Defeat To Iceland

In a disappointing friendly match, Scotland lost 3-1 to Iceland. Lewis Ferguson noted that despite long domestic seasons, the team's performance was unacceptable.

Lewis Ferguson expressed that although many players in the Scotland squad had endured lengthy domestic seasons, it was not a valid excuse for their 3-1 friendly loss to Iceland. The team sought a morale boost before facing Liechtenstein later this week but faced boos at Hampden Park. Andri Gudjohnsen scored first with a remarkable shot from outside the box, hitting the crossbar before going in.

Scotland equalised in the 25th minute through John Souttar. However, they fell behind again just before half-time when Lewis Ferguson accidentally scored an own goal. Victor Palsson secured Iceland's victory seven minutes into the second half with a powerful header from Albert Gudmundsson's free-kick, leaving Cieran Slicker unable to stop it.

Scotland Loses 3-1 to Iceland in Friendly

Scotland has now lost 12 of their last 21 matches across all competitions, winning only four and drawing five. This number of defeats matches San Marino's losses since Scotland's first defeat in this run. "It's been a long season for a lot of the lads, but we're here to do a job," Ferguson told BBC Radio Scotland. "We set out to win the game, but we're nowhere near the standard we, or anybody, expect."

The team's issues were compounded when goalkeeper Angus Gunn had to leave the field after just seven minutes due to injury. Debutant Cieran Slicker replaced him and was on the pitch for only 64 seconds before his poor clearance led to Gudjohnsen scoring Iceland's opening goal.

After the match, Scotland manager Steve Clarke admitted that while circumstances were challenging, giving Slicker his international debut might have been premature. "It was disappointing," Clarke said. "The night didn't get off to a great start." He noted that losing their goalkeeper early and conceding quickly made things difficult for Slicker.

"It's difficult for Cieran; I really feel for him," Clarke continued. "He got thrown into a situation that he wasn't quite ready for." With injuries affecting Craig Gordon, Liam Kelly, and Zander Clark, Clarke anticipated potential problems in goalkeeping options.

Looking Ahead

The coach acknowledged that despite some good attempts on goal, Scotland appeared flat during the match. "I'm not so sure it was too much to do with the shape; we just looked a little bit flat at times," Clarke stated. He hoped for better performance in their upcoming match against Liechtenstein.

If Angus Gunn is unable to play in the next game due to his injury, young Callan McKenna will travel with the squad as they search for another available goalkeeper in Scotland who isn't on holiday.
