Scotland Beat Curacao 4-1 As Shankland Brace Seals World Cup Send-Off
Scotland opened World Cup preparations with a 4-1 victory over 10-player Curacao at Hampden Park, as Lawrence Shankland scored twice in the final home match before travelling to North America. Tahith Chong struck first for Curacao, but Findlay Curtis, Shankland and Ryan Christie replied after Jurgen Locadia’s dismissal changed the match.
The result gave the home crowd a long-awaited friendly success, their first at Hampden Park since a 1-0 win over Denmark in March 2016. Scotland had gone 11 home friendlies without victory, losing eight and drawing three, so this scoreline provided a timely lift before facing Bolivia and then Haiti on 14 June in Group C.

Shankland’s performance strengthened Scotland’s attacking options, with the new Rangers forward scoring in back-to-back internationals for the first time. The first goal arrived on 59 minutes from a rehearsed short corner, finished neatly from Christie’s delivery, while the second followed five minutes later, struck low into the bottom-left corner beyond goalkeeper Eloy Room.
Curtis also delivered a notable contribution and wrote a small piece of Scotland history. The midfielder, aged 19 years and 241 days, became the youngest scorer for the national team since Danny Wilson, who netted at 18 years and 324 days in November 2010. Curtis also won the late penalty, highlighting an influential substitute display.
Curacao, preparing for a first World Cup appearance, started confidently under head coach Dick Advocaat and stunned Hampden Park after 17 minutes. Chong cut inside John Souttar from the left channel and drove a firm shot inside Craig Gordon’s near post, giving the visitors an early lead and exposing Scotland’s slow start.
Seven minutes before half-time, Curacao’s approach shifted when Locadia committed a reckless challenge on Aaron Hickey. Referee Goga Kikacheishvili initially produced a yellow card, but after a VAR review the decision changed to a red for leading with the elbow. Scotland then levelled in first-half stoppage time, as Curtis, on for the injured Billy Gilmour, guided a precise finish into the corner.
Scotland World Cup send-off backed by strong numbers
With the extra player, Scotland controlled the second half and overturned the deficit. The pre-planned short corner routine unlocked Curacao’s defence for Shankland’s first goal, and the hosts continued to press. In the 81st minute Curtis was tripped inside the area by Jurien Gaari, allowing Christie to convert from the spot and complete a convincing 4-1 scoreline.
The statistical picture underlined Scotland’s dominance once Curacao were reduced to 10 players, although Advocaat’s side had caused problems earlier. Scotland produced an expected goals figure of 2.04 from 18 attempts, with 11 efforts on target. Curacao managed nine shots, generating 0.71 expected goals, as Scotland tightened defensively after the interval.
The win also came in the context of a demanding build-up schedule, with one more friendly against Bolivia still to play before travel to the World Cup. Supporters in Glasgow could reflect on improved form, sharper finishing and promising contributions from Shankland and Curtis, while Curacao gained further high-level experience ahead of a debut campaign on the global stage.
