Scotland manager Steve Clarke expressed his disappointment after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal in the Nations League. Cristiano Ronaldo's late goal secured victory for Portugal, leaving Scotland without a win in their last eight competitive matches.
Despite the loss, Clarke praised his team's performance, highlighting their defensive efforts. Scotland managed to defend against 26 shots from Portugal, with seven on target. Clarke noted that the team handled the pressure well, especially considering the quality of players Portugal brought off the bench.

Clarke stated, "I'm disappointed to lose a game where it looked, for a large period, we would get something from it. I'm really disappointed for my players because I think they deserved to get something from the game."
Scott McTominay gave Scotland an early lead in the seventh minute. However, Portugal responded with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo. Ronaldo's decisive goal came in the 88th minute, marking his 901st career goal.
"If you ignore the results, [there are a lot of positives], but we're professional, so it's disappointing," Clarke added. "We played well in these two games, but we don't have anything to show for it."
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez made a strategic decision by bringing Ronaldo on at half-time. This move paid off as Ronaldo contributed significantly to Portugal's comeback. Martinez explained that managing Ronaldo's physical performance was crucial due to the tight schedule.
"Ronaldo did 17 sprints against Croatia. He is the player who made the most sprints. So we need to protect the players," Martinez said. "The question was whether Ronaldo played the first half and left or came in and finished the game."
Clarke remains optimistic about future matches despite recent setbacks. He believes that analysing these games will provide valuable insights for upcoming fixtures. Clarke encouraged his players not to be too hard on themselves and to understand the progress being made.
"When you bring quality players from the bench like Roberto [Martinez] can do, you always know there's a risk, but I felt we handled it well," Clarke remarked. "We'll go away and analyse these games, and hopefully, we can give the lads a few pointers for the games next month."
The match against Portugal highlighted both strengths and areas for improvement for Scotland as they prepare for their next challenges.
