Scotland Must Adjust Mindset To Progress In World Cup, Christie Says
Scotland move towards a crucial clash with Morocco at Boston Stadium on Friday, knowing victory would guarantee progression to the World Cup round of 32 and keep alive hopes of finishing first in World Cup Group C.
That scenario follows Scotland’s 1-0 win over Haiti, which marked a first World Cup appearance since 1998 and took Steve Clarke’s team above Brazil and Morocco in World Cup Group C after Brazil’s draw with Morocco.

Ryan Christie stresses that Scotland’s approach must now change from simple participation to serious ambition, explaining that the squad need a stronger mentality to progress in the World Cup Group C campaign and beyond the group phase for the first time in the country’s history.
When asked if Scotland could defeat Morocco, Christie said:Absolutely. I think we've got to think like that. Especially after the first result against Haiti. We're trying not to get too ahead of ourselves, but at the same time, you've got to draw confidence from that and ride the wave a little bit.
Christie also reflects on the rapid shift in expectations since qualification, admitting that playing at this tournament fulfils a personal ambition but saying that Scotland must now look higher. "It's a dream come true to even play in a World Cup, but you have to quickly adjust your targets and adjust your mindset. From being happy to be here, you want to go and create more and keep pushing the bar. The manager has kept the foot to the floor."
Analytical projections underline Scotland’s strong position in World Cup Group C. The Opta supercomputer gives Clarke’s side an 80.7% chance of reaching the knockout rounds and a 15.3% probability of finishing top of the section before facing Morocco.
Christie underlines that Scotland’s defensive work will be vital against Morocco, who have proved awkward opponents for European teams at recent tournaments. "We need to keep those numbers [shots conceded] as low as possible and then do our bit when we do get the chance to hurt them."
Scotland arrive at this fixture with encouraging competitive form. They have won eight of their last 11 competitive matches, drawing one and losing two, and that run includes five wins from their last six games, with the only defeat in that recent spell coming against Greece.
Both losses to Greece were heavy setbacks within an otherwise positive period. Greece beat Scotland 3-0 in the Nations League in March 2025 and then earned a 3-2 victory in a World Cup qualifier in November 2025, results that still serve as reference points for Scotland’s improvement.
Morocco’s recent World Cup record against European nations underlines the challenge within World Cup Group C. Morocco have suffered only one defeat in their last six group games against European opposition at the World Cup, with two wins and three draws, losing only 1-0 to Portugal in 2018.
History also offers a sharp reminder for Scotland before this meeting in World Cup Group C. The only previous World Cup match between Morocco and Scotland came in the 1998 group stage, when Morocco recorded a 3-0 victory, which remains Morocco’s biggest World Cup win.
Scotland’s players trained in familiar surroundings before facing Morocco in World Cup Group C, returning to Boston ahead of a match that could seal a historic knockout appearance for the team.
The meeting with Morocco in World Cup Group C now carries historic weight for Scotland, who balance a favourable statistical outlook with awareness of past setbacks, while Christie’s comments reflect a squad intent on matching improved form and data with the stronger mindset needed to finally go beyond the group stage.
