Seamus Coleman To Leave Everton After 17 Years Of Service
Seamus Coleman is set to end a 17-year spell at Everton, with the club confirming the captain will depart when the contract finishes this summer. The 37-year-old right-back could feature in a final Goodison Park appearance against Sunderland on Sunday, and Everton have offered Coleman a future coaching position if retirement follows.
Coleman’s Everton record is extensive. The defender has played 433 competitive matches, including 372 Premier League games, the highest total for any Everton player. Coleman has scored 28 goals, supplied 27 assists and captained the side 140 times. Another appearance against Sunderland would lift Coleman into 10th place on Everton’s all-time list.

Everton originally signed Coleman from Sligo Rovers in 2009 for a reported fee of 60,000, with David Moyes bringing the right-back to Merseyside. Coleman arrived as a 20-year-old reserve team player aiming simply to stand out enough for a place on the bench, before developing into a long-term first-team leader for the club.
Coming over here as a 20-year-old from Sligo Rovers to a reserve team, I was just hoping to impress enough to get on the bench. To think I've gone on to make the most Premier League appearances for Everton and to become captain of this great football clubit was beyond my wildest dreams.

I want to thank the fans for their unbelievable support. You've helped me in more ways than you could imagine. I've always tried my best to put Everton Football Club first and you all mean the world to me. I live in the cityI see you all dailyand Ive taken your love of the football club back into the dressing room to explain to the lads how much Everton means to the people. I also thank my managers, teammates and all the staff at Everton. They've seen me happy, sad, angry, emotional, but the greater cause has always been Everton Football Club. Thank you for making me a better captain and teammate. Its an incredible football club with incredible people.
After more than 17 years at this great football club, I've decided this season will be my last as a player here, Coleman told the club website.
Coleman’s message underlined a close link with both the city and the dressing room, shaped across a career spanning more than 17 years. Everton described Coleman as "one of our greatest-ever servants and captains" in the club’s announcement on 15 May 2026, marking the approaching end of a long Premier League tenure.
