Sergio Conceicao Sets Ambitious Goal For AC Milan: Champions League Qualification

Sergio Conceicao has taken charge of AC Milan, aiming to secure a Champions League qualifying position despite a challenging start in Serie A. He emphasises the need for consistency and maximum effort from his players.

Sergio Conceicao has set his sights on securing a Champions League spot with AC Milan, despite their shaky start in Serie A. Currently, Milan sits eighth in the league after 17 matches, trailing the top four by eight points. This performance led to the departure of Paulo Fonseca, who managed 12 wins in 24 games across all competitions during his six-month tenure.

Conceicao's initial challenge involves leading his team to Saudi Arabia for a Super Cup semi-final against Juventus in Riyadh. However, his primary goal remains achieving a top-four finish to ensure Champions League qualification. Milan has a rich history in this competition, having won it seven times. Conceicao expressed this ambition at his first press conference, stating, "We all want one thing: for Milan to return to the Champions League. We are Milan."

Conceicao Aims for Champions League with Milan

The new manager faces immediate hurdles as he prepares for the match against Juventus with limited time. Despite these challenges, Conceicao emphasized that there would be no complaints or excuses from his side. He acknowledged the pressure that comes with managing a club like Milan but expects every player to give their best effort.

Milan's recent form has been inconsistent, drawing three of their last four home league games and winning just once. This inconsistency leaves them five points behind sixth-placed Juventus, who hold the final European qualifying spot in Serie A.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Milan's senior advisor, attended Conceicao's introductory press conference and commented on Fonseca's brief stint as manager. "Before we begin with Conceicao, I want to thank Fonseca for what he has done and for the professional that he is," Ibrahimovic remarked. He noted that while Fonseca was professional, he struggled to maintain consistent results.

Under Fonseca's leadership this season, Milan found some stability in European competition. They are currently 12th in the 36-team standings and just one point away from the top eight with two matches remaining.

Expectations Moving Forward

Conceicao is aware of the expectations placed upon him and understands that pressure is inherent at a prestigious club like Milan. He stated that while some players might be happier than others with team selections, everyone must strive to perform at their highest level.

The task ahead is challenging but not insurmountable. Conceicao aims to guide Milan back into Europe's elite competition while maintaining focus on immediate objectives like the upcoming clash against Juventus.

The journey will test both management and players as they work towards restoring Milan's status among Europe's football giants.
