Serhou Guirassy played a pivotal role in Borussia Dortmund's 3-0 victory over Sporting CP in the Champions League. On Tuesday, he scored once and assisted another goal, helping last year's runners-up gain control of their play-off tie. Guirassy's header marked his 10th goal of the competition, and he later set up Pascal Gross to double the lead.
With his performance, Guirassy matched the achievements of Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski. He equalled their record for the most goals scored by a Dortmund player in a single European Cup or Champions League season, with 10 goals. Additionally, Guirassy now holds the record for goal involvements in a single campaign for Dortmund, with 13.

Sporting CP started aggressively but failed to convert their chances. Maxi Araujo's powerful shot hit the crossbar early on. Later, Conrad Harder's attempt was saved by Gregor Kobel, leaving Sporting without a shot on target in the first half. This changed when Karim Adeyemi's effort was blocked by Rui Silva in the 55th minute.
Guirassy then wrong-footed Silva with a looping header from Julian Brandt's cross. Eight minutes later, he delivered a precise cross that Gross volleyed into the net from close range. Despite bringing on top striker Viktor Gyokeres, Sporting struggled to penetrate Dortmund's defence.
Adeyemi sealed the win with an 82nd-minute goal after a swift five-touch counter-attack. This marked Niko Kovac's successful European debut as Dortmund's coach ahead of next week's return leg. Sporting appeared resigned well before Adeyemi's strike.
Dortmund dominated with expected goals worth 1.87 compared to Sporting’s 0.73. Their tactical superiority was evident throughout the match as they capitalised on key opportunities while maintaining defensive solidity against Sporting’s attacks.
This victory not only highlighted Guirassy’s exceptional form but also showcased Dortmund’s strength as they aim for further success in Europe this season.
