Serie A Top-four Race Goes Down To The Wire, Says Spalletti

Luciano Spalletti accepts that the Serie A top-four race remains finely balanced after Juventus drew 0-0 with AC Milan, in a match where both clubs needed victory to strengthen their Champions League positions but instead shared points that did little to change a congested standings picture.

Juventus stay fourth after this result and miss the opportunity to move above Milan, sitting three points ahead of Como and Roma, while Spalletti stressed that the pressure will not ease as the run-in continues and Champions League qualification remains far from guaranteed.

Juventus still hold a 77.4% chance of reaching the Champions League, behind Napoli on 98.2% and Milan on 94.8%, highlighting how tight the remaining place is, especially with Como and Roma both winning and maintaining strong pressure on Spalletti’s side in the table.

This stalemate becomes the fourth 0-0 in the last five Serie A meetings between Milan and Juventus, matching the number of goalless draws from the previous 41 league clashes, and it is also the first season in which both fixtures between these rivals finish 0-0.

On the pitch, Juventus finish with more attempts, registering 10 shots and five on target, and Khephren Thuram has a first-half goal ruled out for offside, yet Milan threaten too, with Alexis Saelemaekers striking the crossbar after the break in the game’s clearest chance.

Juventus are now unbeaten in eight Serie A games, with five wins and three draws, and remain the only side without a league defeat since the start of March, though Spalletti explains that a controlled approach against Milan is deliberate, intended to protect that steady positive sequence.

Reflecting on the performance, Spalletti says: "We continued our journey, we tried to take the initiative. A bit too slowly and predictably in the first half, we never managed to get past their men, so they were always in position," while also insisting Juventus had planned carefully without the ball.

Spalletti warns about Milan’s threat, stating: "You have to be wary with Milan, as you feel like you are in complete control, and then they suddenly burst forward with three or four to make it difficult for you. The danger is when you feel comfortable against them."

Explaining the tactical focus further, Spalletti adds: "When building out from the back, we worked on the preventative marking to ensure those counter-attacks didn't happen. There were a few situations where we could've done better, including a foul on Jonathan David, but it was missed."

Looking at the wider battle for the Serie A top-four race, Spalletti remarks: "I think it will go down to the wire or very close to it, because these are the games," then continues: "Roma and Como won, so we still have quite a few matches left to win before we can deserve our place in that tournament."

Spalletti underlines the physical and mental strain, saying: "It's time for the final sprint, and at this stage is where the fatigue of a long season starts to build up; that is where you can tell who belongs at Juventus and who doesn't. We must confirm the culture of self-discipline, hard work and determination that inhabits this club, giving our all every day and letting nothing go by."
