Khadija Shaw Highlights Importance Of Comeback Victory For Manchester City In Women's Super League

Khadija Shaw's late goal secured a vital comeback victory for Manchester City against Liverpool. She emphasised the significance of such wins in a tightly contested Women's Super League.

Manchester City's Khadija Shaw praised her team's comeback win against Liverpool, highlighting the importance of such victories in the Women's Super League. Shaw scored twice at Anfield, including a decisive late goal, turning the game around after Olivia Smith's 41st-minute strike had put Liverpool ahead. This win propelled City to the top of the league after four matches.

Shaw emphasised the significance of these wins in a competitive league. "It's a very important win because we know how tight this league is," she told Sky Sports. "Fine margins will decide the championship." She noted that Liverpool's defensive setup made it challenging, but City adapted by focusing on delivering balls into the box, which led to her crucial goal.

Shaw Praises City's Comeback Win in WSL

The victory capped off an excellent week for Manchester City, who also triumphed over Barcelona in the Champions League earlier. This marks City's unbeaten run in their first four WSL games for the first time since 2019-20. Last season's runners-up are poised to compete strongly again this year.

Shaw's performance was pivotal as she outmaneuvered Niamh Fahey to secure the win for Gareth Taylor’s side. Reflecting on her decisive goal, Shaw said, "For me, I knew where the goal was and so I positioned myself in between the ball and the defender." Her focus was on striking hard and accurately.

Liverpool played without manager Matt Beard due to illness, with assistant Scott Rogers stepping in. Rogers believed Liverpool deserved at least a draw. "I thought we deserved a point from the game," he stated. He noted their strategy involved frustrating City and capitalising on counter-attacks, which led to Smith's goal.

Despite having less possession, Rogers felt Liverpool controlled parts of the match. They limited City to two shots on target while having three themselves. However, defensive lapses towards the end allowed City to clinch victory.
