Sheffield Wednesday Faces Further Six-Point Deduction From EFL Over Payment Issues

Sheffield Wednesday have been penalised with an additional six-point deduction by the English Football League (EFL) due to repeated failures in paying staff earlier this year. This comes after the club initially faced a 12-point deduction when they entered administration in October, amid fan protests against Deijphon Chansiri's ownership. The club was already 21 points behind Swansea City, who are in 21st place in the Championship table, and this gap widened to 27 points on Monday.

The club was charged for not paying players and other staff members in March, May, and June of this year. Additionally, they failed to make necessary payments to HM Revenue & Customs. As a result of these breaches, Chansiri has been banned by the EFL. An independent commission ratified an agreement between the club and the association regarding these penalties.

An EFL statement confirmed: "Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to payment obligations, with the club's former owner, Mr Dejphon Chansiri, prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL club for a period of three years." The sanctions were agreed upon by both parties and approved by the chair of the independent disciplinary commission.

On Saturday, Sheffield Wednesday suffered a 3-2 defeat against Preston North End, marking their fourth consecutive loss. Upcoming matches include trips to Blackburn Rovers and Watford for Henrik Pedersen's team. These challenges add pressure as they face potential relegation to League One.
