Marco Silva Undecided On Fulham Future After Season Finale

Fulham finish their Premier League season against Newcastle United with questions hanging over Marco Silva and the club’s direction, while both teams already know European football is out of reach after Chelsea’s decisive win earlier in the week.

Newcastle arrive lifted by a 3-1 home victory over West Ham United, highlighted by goals from William Osula and Nick Woltemade, but Eddie Howe’s side, like Fulham, cannot catch Chelsea or Sunderland on the final day.

Silva undecided on Fulham future

Silva’s future remains unresolved, with the head coach confirming that he has still not committed to staying beyond this season, despite reports of a three-year contract offer from Fulham and links to Benfica should Jose Mourinho move to Real Madrid.

Asked about the situation after the 1-1 draw with Wolves, Silva told Match of the Day: "I have not decided. I understand the fans want to know the future of the club. The club and I cannot communicate anything when the decision is not made."

Silva joined Fulham in July 2021 and described the upcoming transfer window as one of the most important for the club, with forward Harry Wilson, who has 10 league goals this campaign, also entering the final months of a contract that expires in June.

Discussing what comes next, Silva added regarding his own position: "We are going to have meetings, I am going to analyse. I believe there are many things to analyse, and you need to be calm at this moment to address many, many things."

Fulham vs Newcastle recent form and European race outcome

Fulham’s draw with bottom side Wolves halted momentum and, combined with Chelsea’s midweek victory, confirmed the end of any European ambitions ahead of facing Newcastle, who were similarly affected by the same result involving Chelsea and Tottenham.

Chelsea’s 2-1 success over Spurs, with Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos scoring in each half, moved Chelsea three points clear of Newcastle, and because Chelsea meet Sunderland, who also sit above Newcastle and Fulham, there is no possible final-day scenario that lets Howe’s team climb above both rivals.

Fulham vs Newcastle players to watch and attacking threats

Wilson has been Fulham’s main attacking outlet in the league this season, leading the squad with 10 goals and six assists, and only Clint Dempsey, Louis Saha, Dimitar Berbatov and Luis Boa Morte have ever posted more combined goal contributions for Fulham in a single Premier League season.

On the Newcastle side, Osula, aged 22 years and 286 days, recently became the youngest player to hit a brace in a top-flight match for the club since Kenedy did so against Southampton in March 2018, and Osula has now scored seven league goals this season.

Osula’s recent scoring run is notable because six of those seven goals arrived across the last eight Premier League appearances, compared with only two goals in his previous 50 games at this level for Sheffield United and Newcastle combined.

Reflecting on Newcastle’s push to end well, Osula said: "We've got our heads down in training and worked hard to make sure we finish the season strong. Everybody wants to do the best for the club. Everybody wants to play football, and I thank God that I'm playing now. It's the best feeling [to score at St James' Park], it's always nice to get on the scoresheet."

Fulham vs Newcastle head-to-head record and home form

Fulham have struggled in recent meetings with Newcastle, losing six of the last eight Premier League clashes, although both exceptions came last season when Fulham recorded two victories, and Silva’s team have won only one of their final league matches across the last eight seasons.

That solitary win in final-day fixtures was a 4-2 success at Luton Town in the 2023-24 Premier League season, while this campaign Fulham have taken 10 home victories in the league, their best Craven Cottage return since 2011-12 and only two home draws, the fewest in the division.

Fulham vs Newcastle away record, final-day trend and prediction

Newcastle are forecast as favourites by the Opta supercomputer, and the data model points towards a narrow away success, though Howe’s side have only two wins from eight league away matches in 2026, both against London opposition, Tottenham in February and Chelsea in March.

When finishing a league campaign in London, Newcastle have an impressive recent record, unbeaten in seven such games since a 3-2 loss at Spurs in 1972-73, including 4-0 and 2-0 wins at Fulham in 2018-19 and 2020-21, and they have avoided losing final league fixtures in back-to-back seasons since a sequence between 2011-12 and 2013-14.

Last season, Newcastle fell 1-0 at home to Everton on matchday 38, but history and current modelling still point towards a Newcastle win here, especially given Fulham’s poor record in closing fixtures and Newcastle’s attacking form through players such as Bruno Guimaraes, Nick Woltemade and Osula.

Team Opta win probability
Fulham 33.7%
Draw 24.1%
Newcastle 42.2%

With Fulham’s manager yet to decide on a new contract, Wilson’s future unresolved, Newcastle’s away record mixed and both clubs already out of the race for Europe, the Craven Cottage meeting mainly offers a chance to close the season strongly and shape discussions heading into a crucial summer.
