Simeone Urges Atletico Madrid To Finish LaLiga Strongly Before Club World Cup

Diego Simeone emphasises the need for Atletico Madrid to conclude their LaLiga campaign positively before the upcoming Club World Cup. He highlights the importance of their final matches and maintaining momentum.

Diego Simeone is optimistic that Atletico Madrid will conclude their LaLiga season on a high note, aiming to carry positive momentum into the Club World Cup. Atletico faces Real Sociedad on Saturday, aware that their highest possible finish is third, as Barcelona and Real Madrid have pulled ahead. Despite the upcoming Club World Cup, Simeone has encouraged his team to focus on the present challenges.

Atletico's season began with promise, suffering only one loss in their first 19 matches, sparking hopes of another LaLiga title under Simeone. However, a dip in form during the latter half of the season saw those aspirations fade. They also narrowly missed out in other competitions, exiting the Copa del Rey semi-finals against Barcelona and losing to Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 via penalties.

Simeone Calls for Strong LaLiga Finish

Simeone emphasised the importance of ending LaLiga strongly before shifting attention to international competition. "It's not so easy [to think about the Club World Cup], because the focus is not the same," he stated at a pre-match press conference. He stressed finishing the remaining four games positively and meeting fans' expectations at home.

The turning point for Atletico came with a 2-1 defeat at Getafe in February, which dashed their hopes of topping LaLiga. Simeone reflected, "I think we competed very well in LaLiga until February or March." This loss was followed by elimination from both the Champions League and a defeat to Barcelona in La Liga.

Atletico's final LaLiga fixtures include matches against Osasuna, Real Betis, and Girona. Afterward, they will face Paris Saint-Germain, Seattle Sounders, and Botafogo in the Club World Cup. Simeone hopes these games will prepare his squad for future challenges.

"We have to finish these last four games in the best way possible," Simeone urged. Playing at home adds responsibility, and he hopes fans' demands will inspire better performances. "Hopefully it will lead us to give our all," he added.

Simeone remains hopeful that Atletico can secure a strong league finish despite setbacks earlier this year. The team aims to regain form and confidence as they prepare for upcoming domestic and international competitions.
