Arne Slot has expressed his desire to continue working with Virgil van Dijk for an extended period. The Liverpool captain's future beyond this season is uncertain, as his contract, along with those of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is set to expire. Van Dijk can now negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs for a free transfer in the next window.

Despite these uncertainties, it is anticipated that Van Dijk will remain at Liverpool for a ninth season. He played a crucial role in Liverpool's recent 4-0 victory over Tottenham in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg, helping the team secure a place in their first final under Slot's management. Since joining Liverpool in January 2018, Van Dijk has scored more goals across all competitions than any other Premier League defender.

Slot praised Van Dijk's influence on the team, highlighting his contribution to 10 clean sheets in 23 Premier League matches this season. "Virgil deserves every compliment he gets," Slot stated during a news conference. "He's been outstanding for this club for so many years and, since I've been here, he's been outstanding for me as well."

The manager also emphasised Van Dijk's leadership qualities during the match against Tottenham. "He was aggressive in a good way, led the team with and without the ball," Slot noted. "It was no coincidence it took 80 minutes for Tottenham's first shot of note." Slot hopes Van Dijk can maintain good health and continue contributing significantly to Liverpool's success.

Liverpool remains competitive on four fronts this season and aims to advance further in the FA Cup by facing Plymouth Argyle this Sunday. However, Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss this match due to injury. "Plymouth is going to be too early for him," Slot mentioned regarding Alexander-Arnold's availability.

The manager added that while they are hopeful about Alexander-Arnold's recovery, they are cautious about rushing him back into action. "It won't take months or even weeks," Slot explained. "But it is only three days after Plymouth, so let's wait and see if he's available." The team prioritises long-term fitness over immediate returns.
