Soccer-New tournament will add to Beckham's busy schedule
LOS ANGELES, Jan 14 (Reuters) - David Beckham's schedule got a little busier when it was announced the Los Angeles Galaxy would take part in a new SuperLiga competition that includes top teams from the MLS and Mexico.
The Galaxy, who sent shockwaves through the soccer world on Thursday by signing ex-England captain Beckham to a five-year 250 million dollar deal, will compete with seven other clubs.
There will be four teams each from the MLS and the Mexican Soccer Federation's first division playing in what is being touted as the pre-eminent club tournament in North America.
''We are proud to announce the creation of SuperLiga, which will quickly become one of the most prestigious international club soccer tournaments held in the United States,'' said MLS commissioner Don Garber in a statement yesterday.
''This tournament presents the most authentic competition between rival soccer nations and will bring out the passion and pride of fans in our hemisphere.'' Modelled on the UEFA Champions League, the format includes a group and a knockout phase with all games staged at U.S. venues.
The SuperLiga will be played between July 24 and Aug. 29 and carry a 1 million dollar winner's prize.
Joining the Galaxy from the MLS in the inaugural competition will be D C United, FC Dallas and 2006 MLS Cup champions Houston Dynamo.
The Mexican entries will be CONCACAF champions Club America, Copa Sudamericana holders CF Pachuca, Monarcas Morelia and CD Guadalajara.
