Somalia referee to officiate Champions; Denied by USA in World Cup 2026, but UEFA hands Huge Opportunity
UEFA has selected Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa. The match is scheduled for August 12, 2026, at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.
This appointment comes just days after Artan, one of Africa’s top referees and the 2025 CAF Best Male Referee, was dramatically barred from entering the United States, preventing him from becoming the first Somali to officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

In April 2026, Artan was named to FIFA’s final list of referees for the tournament co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. He traveled from Istanbul to Miami in early June for mandatory preparations but was denied entry at Miami International Airport after an extended inspection. US authorities cited “vetting concerns” and later referenced alleged associations with suspected members of terror organizations, despite Artan holding a valid visa and diplomatic passport.
FIFA had no choice but to remove him from the World Cup roster. Artan returned to Mogadishu on June 10 to a hero’s welcome, with crowds, officials, and government figures hailing him as a national symbol of resilience and pride. He expressed disappointment but vowed to focus on future opportunities and urged Somali youth to take pride in their country.
UEFA Steps In: Recognition and Solidarity
UEFA’s decision to appoint Artan for the Super Cup, following discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is widely seen as a strong show of support for the referee and a merit-based recognition of his elite standing.
The UEFA Super Cup pits the UEFA Champions League winners (PSG) against the Europa League winners (Aston Villa) in a prestigious season-opening clash. Artan’s selection places him at the center of European football’s spotlight, continuing his history-making trajectory.
Football fans and officials across Africa and beyond have celebrated the news, viewing it as a powerful counterpoint to the World Cup controversy. Artan’s story underscores themes of talent transcending borders, the impact of geopolitics on sport, and the global respect for excellence in refereeing.
As Artan prepares for Salzburg, his journey from Mogadishu pitches to Europe’s premier club showcase serves as an inspiration, proving that setbacks on one stage can open doors on another.
