Son Heung-min has concluded his decade-long tenure with Tottenham by transferring to Los Angeles, setting a new MLS record fee. The South Korean forward's move to BMO Stadium was confirmed by Spurs for a reported £20 million. This transfer makes Son the most expensive player in MLS history.
Before this announcement, Son had already shared his intention to leave Tottenham during a press conference prior to their pre-season match against Newcastle United. At 33, he expressed a desire for fresh challenges after leading Tottenham to Europa League success last season, marking their first major trophy in 17 years.

The transfer fee paid for Son surpasses the previous MLS record of £16.5 million set by Atlanta United for Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough in February. Son's presence at LAFC's recent 2-1 victory over Tigres in the Leagues Cup highlights his readiness to contribute to his new team’s ambitions in the Western Conference.
Despite interest from Saudi Arabia, no deal materialised before Tottenham confirmed Son's departure on Wednesday. The club paid an emotional tribute to their captain, acknowledging his significant contributions both on and off the field.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy praised Son as one of the greatest players ever to wear the Lilywhite shirt. "Not only is he a wonderfully gifted footballer, but he's also an incredible human being who has touched hearts and inspired people throughout the club and all over the world," Levy stated.
During his time at Tottenham, Son scored 173 goals and provided 101 assists across all competitions. In the Premier League alone, he netted 127 goals and assisted 27 times in 333 appearances. His impact on the pitch was matched by his influence off it, making him a cherished figure at the club.
The Europa League victory in Bilbao stands out as a memorable moment in Tottenham's history, with Son lifting the trophy as captain. "Sonny has given so much to this club, both on and off the pitch," Levy added. "We wish him all the best for the future, and he will always be welcome back at the club as a beloved and cherished member of our Spurs family."
Son now looks forward to helping LAFC improve their standing from sixth place in the Western Conference. His arrival is expected to bring new energy and skill to his new team as they aim for greater success.
