South Africa and Congo will look to take home the consolation of a prize in third place after their heartbreak in the semifinals earlier this week in Ivory Coast. The third-place match takes place at Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Saturday (February 11). Bafana Bafana lost on penalties despite a strong performance against Nigeria, while the Leopards were defeated by the tournament's hosts, Ivory Coast.
After the mental and physical strain of playing extra time in the quarterfinals and semifinals, it will be interesting to see what South Africa has left in the tank when they play in the third-place match.
Hugo Broos's team may still be in shock following their defeat by Nigeria on Wednesday since they had taken the Super Eagles by surprise in the first half with their back-three substitution and better cohesion.
Despite enjoying joy between the lines and taking advantage of the West African nation's passive structure without the ball-the three-time champions maintained a high defensive line but did not put much pressure on the opponent in possession-Bafana Bafana was unable to pull ahead.
After the interval, South Africa fell down, but they tied the score in the ninetieth minute thanks to a late penalty from Teboho Mokoena. They also had a chance to win the match with a last-minute kick from Khuliso Mudau, who missed after Stanley Nwabali parried Mokoena's free kick.
The match proceeded into extra time, and although though Broos's team was playing for penalties because of Ronwen Williams's incredible performance against Cape Verde, the goalkeeper failed to save any of Nigeria's kicks during the loss.
