The AFC Asian Cup will see the opening Group E matches on Sunday as two-time champions South Korea begin their campaign against Bahrain at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Al Rayyan on Monday (January 15).
Heung-Min Son-starring South Korea are looking to end their 64-year-old title drought at the AFC Asian Cup since winning the first two editions back in 1956 and '60.
Bahrain, on the other hand, are looking to make a deeper run since reaching the knockout stages for the second time during the last edition in the UAE before making a round-of-16 exit. The Arab nation, who is also expecting a huge crowd support at the venue, finished fourth at the AFC Asian Cup in 2004.
As far as team news is concerned, Jurgen Klinsmann-coached Korea are likely to start both Son Heung-Min and Kim Min-Jae, who were used as second-half substitutes during the previous match against Iraq. Midfielder Kang-in Lee is qualified to participate for his nation in this match even though he was sent off in the previous one.
The Iraq match saw South Korea take lead five minutes before halftime as Jae-Sung Lee found the net, and that turned out to be the crucial moment in a close match. Since September, the Tigers of Asia have emerged victorious in all six of their games across all categories.
Next up for them is a matchup with a rival team that has only won once in the last six iterations of this competition. South Korea will be eager to set the early tone as they pursue continental supremacy, having started each of their last three Asian Cup campaigns with victories.
As for Bahrain, their first-choice goalkeeper Ibrahim Lutfalla has made a name for himself and is most likely to continue in that role. Abdulla Yusuf Helal, 30, is getting ready to earn his 97th cap on Monday, bringing his total number of international appearances to almost a century.
