Southampton Reach Wembley After Charles's Extra-time Winner Seals Win Over Middlesbrough

Southampton moved within one win of the Premier League after defeating Middlesbrough 2-1 at St. Mary’s, with Shea Charles scoring in the 116th minute. The extra-time goal settled a tense Championship play-off semi-final second leg and set up a decisive final against Hull City.

The Saints now prepare for the Wembley showpiece on 23 May, with promotion on the line. Southampton reached the play-off final for only the second time and first since 2024, when a 1-0 victory over Leeds United secured promotion after finishing that season in fourth place.

Southampton reach Wembley with Charles winner

The Wembley clash with Hull City will also be Southampton’s second visit to the national stadium this season. Earlier in the campaign, Southampton lost an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City there. The club will hope those recent experiences under pressure help deliver another Premier League return.

The decisive moment arrived deep into extra-time as penalties seemed certain. Charles collected possession on the right and swung in a left-footed cross. The delivery flew past a crowded penalty area untouched and dropped inside the far post, leaving Sol Brynn beaten and sending Southampton into the play-off final.

Middlesbrough had started strongly and struck after five minutes. Riley McGree met Callum Brittain’s cross from the right and guided a first-time finish into the far corner of Daniel Peretz’s goal. That early strike increased the tension inside St. Mary’s during a tie already coloured by spying allegations.

Southampton almost answered immediately when Ryan Manning picked out Ross Stewart, but the forward failed to convert. At the other end, Brittain’s shot in the 31st minute deflected off Dael Fry towards goal and forced a save from Peretz. The pressure told in first-half stoppage time, though, after James Bree’s free-kick.

Manning’s volley from Bree’s delivery was pushed out by Brynn, yet Stewart reacted fastest. Stewart rose above the defence and headed in the rebound to level the tie. That goal changed the mood, and Southampton came out after the interval with greater control and attacking purpose against a tiring Middlesbrough team.

Manning remained involved after the restart, seeing a shot deflect off Luke Ayling and into the side-netting. Ayling then risked a penalty when tangling with Leo Scienza inside the area. Cyle Larin later forced Brynn into a sharp save with a powerful effort as normal time drew to a close.

Extra-time brought further drama. Brynn denied Samuel Edozie after a driving run, while Taylor Harwood-Bellis sliced the rebound wide. Middlesbrough offered less attacking threat by this stage as Southampton pushed for a winner. The contest stayed physical throughout, reflecting the heated build-up after Middlesbrough’s complaints about alleged opposition spying.

Across the second leg, Southampton showed greater efficiency than in the first match of the tie. Southampton attempted 20 shots and produced an expected goals figure of 1.99, compared with Middlesbrough’s xG of 1 from 19 attempts. "Data Debrief: Saints go marching on" reflected a contest shaped by pressure and fine margins.

Southampton’s late victory over Middlesbrough, built on persistence and improved finishing, now brings a single, clear target. Beat Hull City at Wembley on 23 May and a Premier League place awaits. Lose, and the campaign ends with the disappointment of another season in the Championship.
