Southampton Achieves First Premier League Victory Against Ipswich Town With Late Onuachu Goal

Paul Onuachu's late strike secured Southampton's first Premier League win under Ivan Juric, defeating Ipswich Town 2-1. The match showcased key moments from both teams as Southampton aims to improve their standings.

Paul Onuachu's late goal secured Southampton's first Premier League victory under Ivan Juric, defeating Ipswich Town 2-1 at Portman Road. Onuachu scored the winning goal just three minutes before the final whistle in a clash between the league's bottom two teams. This marked Southampton's first away league win of the season.

Southampton took the lead in the 21st minute when Mateus Fernandes' deflected cross found Joe Aribo, whose volley was helped into the net by Arijanet Muric. Ipswich equalised after half an hour as Liam Delap outpaced Jan Bednarek to a loose ball and calmly scored past Aaron Ramsdale. It seemed both teams would share the points.

Southampton Claims First Premier League Win

However, Onuachu capitalised on a rebound from Kamaldeen Sulemana's saved shot to secure victory for Southampton. Despite this win, Juric's team remains at the bottom of the table but has closed the gap to seven points behind Ipswich, who missed an opportunity to escape the relegation zone and stay in 19th place.

This victory ended Southampton's streak of 13 Premier League matches without a win and 20 away games since their triumph over Chelsea in February 2023. The Saints have been ahead in four of their last six league games, having scored first in only four of their initial 18 matches this season.

Onuachu's goal came at 86 minutes and 38 seconds, marking Southampton's latest winning goal in an away Premier League game since Charlie Austin's decisive strike against Manchester United at Old Trafford in January 2016, which occurred at 86 minutes and 40 seconds.
