Bengaluru, December 8: Southampton have been tracking FC Basel star winger Mohamed Elyounoussi as they plan to lodge an official bid for the Norwegian international.
Elyounoussi has emerged as one of the finest players in Switzerland after a string of impressive displays for his side and that has alerted Southampton who boast a very strong scouting network.
The 23-year-old is also a target of a host of other European clubs but the Saints are the leading club in his chase. Swiss daily Blick say a scout from Southampton travelled to watch the Norwegian international in action last weekend.
And he was said to be taking plenty of notes as Elyounoussi turned in an impressive display as Basel beat Lausanne 4-1.
The winger scored one and set up another in the impressive away victory which saw Basel keep up the pressure on early leaders Young Boys at the top of the Swiss Super League.
Elyounoussi has also impressed in the Champions League this season, and scored another goal on Tuesday in the 2-0 win at Benfica.
Despite being under contract until 2021, it is understood officials at Basel are resigned to losing the player either in January or the end of this season and will be looking to get as much as they can for the agile winger.
The Swiss giants are aware of a growing number of clubs who have been watching him over the past through months, and would find it hard to turn down a decent fee for him.
The ideal situation for them would be to keep the player till the next summer as they will need their best player in order to win the League title.
Southampton have lacked the edge in attack this season and found it hard to score goals and Elyouniussi could change the scenario with his raw burst of speed and creativity.
