Southampton want Tottenham prodigy Walker-Peters on loan

Bengaluru, January 29: Southampton are ready to swoop for Tottenham youngster Kyle Walker-Peters before the deadline.

Mauricio Pellegrino wants cover for Cedric Soares and has the Spurs full-back in his sights on a loan deal.

Spurs could consider allowing the England Under-21 right-back a short-term move as Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier are ahead of the youngster in the pecking order.

The 20-year-old made a dream debut on the opening weekend of the season when he was man-of-the-match in the victory over Newcastle.

Walker-Peters also came off the bench against Huddersfield in the Premier League but his other matches have been in cups or Europe.

His reward for breaking into the first team squad this season was a new deal at Spurs until 2020.

Spurs would probably like the idea of him getting more playing time on loan but it is hard to see how he would get that at Southampton unless Cedric Soares suffers an injury.

The defender started the FA Cup draw at Newport as a left wing-back but was replaced at half-time as Poch changed his formation in the second half to chase the game.

Mauricio Pochettino rates his Academy product highly and will weigh up whether a loan move will best help his development.

Swansea were also looking at Walker-Peters but Southampton are ahead of them in the queue.

The 20-year-old has shown plenty of promise since his young days and needs more gametime to get to the next level.

A loan deal could benefit the player as well as Spurs who are not short of options at either of the full-back positions.

With the transfer deadline coming close, the 20-year-old could make a temporary switch to Southampton on loan.
