Southampton Extend Unbeaten Run As Cameron Archer Nets Late Winner

Southampton kept their promotion push on track with a 2-1 comeback victory at Swansea City, sealed by a 90th-minute winner from substitute Cameron Archer. The result extended Southampton’s unbeaten Championship run to 16 matches and drew the team level on points with third-placed Ipswich Town, who face Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Earlier, Southampton had trailed after Marko Stamenic struck from close range on 20 minutes, finishing after Zan Vipotnik stretched to keep the ball in play. Swansea controlled long spells of the first half, while Leo Scienza and James Bree both drew sharp saves from goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux before the interval.

Archer nets late winner as Southampton extend run

The visitors responded after the break through another substitute, Shea Charles, who reacted fastest to a flick from Scienza and guided a precise header into the right corner at the back post. As the match moved into the closing stages, Southampton pressed hard, knowing victory would keep the pressure on the automatic promotion places.

That pressure finally told in the 90th minute when Archer arrived with the decisive strike. A dropping ball fell for the forward, whose powerful volley beat Lawrence Vigouroux and crossed the line despite Jay Fulton’s attempt to clear. The late goal preserved Southampton’s strong away sequence, which now stands at eight league games unbeaten.

Southampton’s run under Tonda Eckert now includes seven straight Championship victories, their longest winning streak in the competition since at least the 2016-17 season. It was also their 21st league win of the current campaign, keeping the team firmly in contention for the final automatic promotion place ahead of a busy upcoming schedule.

Despite the result, underlying numbers showed Swansea were competitive. The hosts recorded an expected goals figure of 1.04 from 10 attempts, edging Southampton’s 1.01 from 16 shots. Southampton next meet Bristol City in league action before turning focus to the FA Cup, where an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City awaits next Saturday.

Southampton promotion race alongside Wrexham and Norwich

In League action elsewhere, Wrexham kept top-six ambitions alive with a 2-0 home win against Stoke City, thanks to two goals in two minutes from George Thomason and Josh Windass. Phil Parkinson’s side moved two points behind Hull City, who currently occupy the final play-off spot, and climbed above Derby County on goal difference.

Thomason made the breakthrough on 31 minutes when a curling corner deceived everyone and dropped beyond goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu. Soon after, another direct ball troubled the visitors as Stoke captain Aaron Cresswell misjudged a long pass, allowing Windass to break through and slide the ball into the bottom-right corner past Bazunu.

The standout individual performance came at Ashton Gate, where Mohamed Toure hit a second-half hat-trick during Norwich City’s 4-2 success over Roy Hodgson’s Bristol City. Sam Morsy scored for the hosts after only two minutes, but Toure levelled six minutes into the second half and completed his treble within 25 minutes to give Norwich control.

Bristol City’s task became even harder when Jose Cordoba headed in to stretch Norwich’s lead further, before Sam Bell struck a late consolation. The defeat was Bristol City’s first since Roy Hodgson took charge, halting the positive sequence under the experienced manager and denting momentum against another side chasing promotion relevance.

At the lower end of the Championship table, West Brom’s improvement under James Morrison continued with a 2-0 victory away to Preston North End. Goals from Josh Maja and Daryl Dike ensured another valuable win, adding further distance between West Brom and the relegation places while sustaining confidence within the squad.

Across the division, the day’s results reinforced Southampton’s strong promotion credentials, highlighted Wrexham’s ongoing top-six pursuit and underlined Norwich’s attacking threat through Toure. With crucial fixtures approaching, including Southampton’s meetings with Bristol City and Manchester City, both the promotion race and the relegation fight remain finely balanced on several fronts.
