Spain Held To 0-0 By Egypt As European Champions Fail To Convert Opportunities In A Cautious Friendly
Spain closed the March international window with a goalless draw against Egypt, despite long spells of control. The friendly at Espanyol's RCDE Stadium ended 0-0, with Egypt finishing the match with 10 players. Mostafa Shobeir starred in goal as Spain’s attack failed to turn pressure into a winning strike.
Spain’s dominance showed in the numbers, yet the scoreline stayed blank. The Euro 2024 winners produced 26 attempts to Egypt’s four, generating 2.35 expected goals against 0.13. Egypt still escaped with a clean sheet, a strong outcome considering Spain had previously taken 12 wins from 16 meetings with African opposition.

The hosts threatened early, creating the first clear openings after 15 minutes. Dani Olmo shot straight at Shobeir, then Mohanad Lasheen blocked Ferran Torres near goal. Egypt replied with the best chance of the first half, as Omar Marmoush struck from distance and hit the inside of David Raya’s post.
Spain increased the tempo after the interval and almost broke through soon after the restart. Fermin Lopez danced past defenders following a smart exchange with fellow substitute Victor Munoz, but Shobeir again saved well. Soon after, Pedri and Torres both failed to convert further opportunities as Spain pushed higher.
Borja Iglesias then passed up two major chances as Spain kept searching for a breakthrough. First, a guided header drifted wide from Alejandro Grimaldo’s precise cross from the left. Later, Iglesias lifted a delicate chip over Shobeir, but the attempt dropped the wrong side of the bar.
The decisive disciplinary moment arrived late on, when Spain exploited space in attack again. Iglesias drove forward and was brought down by Hamdi Fathy, who collected a second yellow card with six minutes remaining. Egypt then defended deeper, relying even more on Shobeir’s command in the penalty area.
Spain almost punished the numerical advantage from the resulting set piece. Grimaldo’s free-kick curled over the wall and seemed bound for the net. Shobeir reacted sharply, tipping the effort onto the crossbar. That save completed a standout display, with the Egypt goalkeeper making six stops to preserve the 0-0 scoreline.

Spain ended the international break with mixed feelings after beating Serbia 3-0 before this stalemate. Luis de la Fuente could reflect on heavy control but no breakthrough against Egypt’s disciplined defence. For Egypt, the match provided a notable result and a confidence boost, achieved away from home and with 10 players late on.
