Spain's De La Fuente Calls Nations League Final Against Portugal A Blessing With Ronaldo

Luis de la Fuente describes Spain's upcoming Nations League final against Portugal as a blessing. He praises Cristiano Ronaldo's influence and highlights Spain's recent achievements in football.

Spain's national football team is gearing up for a significant challenge as they face Portugal in the Nations League final at Allianz Arena. The match, scheduled for Sunday, will see Spain aiming for their third major title in three years. Their recent triumphs include the Nations League in 2023 and the European Championships in 2024.

Spain secured their spot in the final with a thrilling 5-4 victory over France. Barcelona's young talent, Lamine Yamal, was instrumental, scoring twice. Meanwhile, Portugal reached the final by overcoming Germany. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive goal after Francisco Conceicao equalised Florian Wirtz's opener.

De la Fuente Praises Ronaldo Ahead of Final

Luis de la Fuente, Spain's coach, expressed admiration for Ronaldo, describing him as a blessing to face. "It's a blessing to face Portugal and a footballer who has shaped an era and a legacy," De la Fuente said. He often cites Ronaldo as an example for his players due to his remarkable career and influence on football.

Ronaldo recently announced he would not participate in the upcoming Club World Cup following his contract expiration with Al-Nassr. Speculation surrounds his next move, with several clubs reportedly interested. In a tweet, Ronaldo stated: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all."

De la Fuente also praised Pedri from Barcelona for his outstanding performances this season under Hansi Flick's management. Pedri scored his first competitive goal for Spain against France and played a crucial role in Barca's domestic treble during the 2024-25 season.

Pedri's Rising Influence

Pedri featured in 59 of Barcelona’s 60 matches across all competitions last season, marking the highest one-season total of his career at the club. His importance is further highlighted by his passing statistics; only Pau Cubarsi completed more successful passes than Pedri in LaLiga.

Ahead of facing Portugal, De la Fuente discussed Pedri’s development into a key player for Spain. "Pedri has a special talent, as a number eight or as a number 10," De la Fuente noted. He emphasised Pedri’s ability to make crucial passes and improve shooting near the opposition box.

As Spain prepares to meet Portugal, they focus on both individual brilliance and collective strength. With talents like Yamal and Pedri shining alongside experienced players, Spain aims to continue their successful run on Sunday against formidable opponents led by Ronaldo.
