Spain's Historic Nations League Win: A Testament To Resilience And Team Spirit

Luis de la Fuente highlights Spain's significant victory over Switzerland in the Nations League as a moment of pride and historical importance. Despite being down to 10 men, Spain showcased resilience and team spirit, securing a win that resonates with national pride.

Luis de la Fuente believes Spain's 4-1 victory over Switzerland in the Nations League signifies something significant for the country. Despite starting Group A4 with a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Serbia, La Roja showcased their prowess on Sunday. Fabian Ruiz scored twice, while Joselu and Ferran Torres also found the net, securing Spain's first win of this season's tournament even after Robin Le Normand was sent off in the 20th minute.

De la Fuente praised his team's resilience after being reduced to 10 players. "I feel like we are doing something important for a country, that people identify with this group of players," he said post-match. He highlighted their humility and sacrifice, expressing pride in a team that continues to surprise him. "If there's one thing I like to boast about, it's the pride I've always felt for this team," he added.

Spain's Historic Win in Nations League

Spain managed only 33.7% possession during the game, understandable given they played with 10 men for most of the match. Despite this, they had nine shots compared to Switzerland's 20 but were more efficient, getting eight on target while Switzerland managed just three.

De la Fuente singled out Joselu for praise, noting his exceptional performance. "I'm very happy for everyone, especially for Joselu because he deserves it," De la Fuente stated. He commended Joselu for fulfilling all expectations both when Spain had 11 players and after they were down to 10.

The coach also mentioned Pedri's contribution before he was substituted. "Pedri was playing a great game," De la Fuente noted. However, tactical adjustments were necessary to maintain their chances. "We felt very powerful," he remarked about their overall performance.

Despite being a man down, Spain interpreted the game masterfully according to De la Fuente. "With 10 men, we have been able to interpret the game in a masterful way," he said proudly. The coach emphasised that every day shows their growth and potential for improvement.

The team's defensive efforts and goalkeeping were also crucial in their success. "With 10 players, we played the perfect game; we defended very well; we had a great goalkeeper..." De la Fuente concluded.
