Spain Appoints Sonia Bermudez As Head Coach Following Euro 2025 Final Defeat To England

Following their Euro 2025 final loss to England, Spain has appointed Sonia Bermudez as the new head coach of the women's national team, replacing Montse Tome.

Spain's women's football team has made a significant change in leadership following their defeat to England in the Euro 2025 final. Montse Tome has been replaced by Sonia Bermudez as head coach. Despite taking an early lead through Mariona Caldentey, Spain lost to England in a penalty shoot-out after Alessia Russo equalised. This marked Spain's best performance at any European Championship.

Tome, who became Spain's first female head coach less than two years ago, was dismissed before her contract ended on August 31. She had succeeded Jorge Vilda, who led the team to a World Cup victory. Bermudez, previously the under-23 coach, will now take charge of the senior team from that date.

Sonia Bermudez Named Spain Women's Team Coach

Bermudez brings extensive experience to her new role. She played 63 matches for Spain between 2008 and 2017, scoring 35 goals. Her club career included stints with Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid. After retiring as a player, she transitioned into coaching within Spain's youth system.

In her coaching career, Bermudez achieved notable success with Spain's under-19 team. She guided them to a European championship in 2024 by defeating the Netherlands 2-1 in the final after overcoming England 3-1 in the semi-finals. Her experience and success at youth level make her a promising choice for leading the senior team.

Bermudez will work alongside Iraia Iturregi, who brings years of coaching experience and over 400 matches in Spain’s top division. Together, they aim to build on Spain’s recent successes and guide the team to future victories.

This strategic move reflects Spain's commitment to maintaining their competitive edge on the international stage. By appointing Bermudez, they hope to continue their upward trajectory in women's football and achieve further success in upcoming tournaments.
