Spain Aims To Make History With First UEFA Women's Euros Title Under Montse Tome

Spain's head coach Montse Tome is optimistic about winning their first UEFA Women's Euros title. After historic victories, including a World Cup win, Spain looks to continue their success against England in the final.

Spain's head coach, Montse Tome, is optimistic about her team's chances in the Euro 2025 final. Spain has never reached this stage before, but they secured their spot by defeating Germany 1-0 in extra time during the semi-finals. This victory marked their first win over Germany in history. Tome believes Spain has been making history throughout the tournament and hopes to conclude it by lifting the trophy.

In recent years, Spain has achieved significant milestones. They won their first World Cup in 2023 by defeating England in the final and followed that with a victory in the inaugural Nations League last year. If they win on Sunday, they will be the first European team since Germany (2001-2009) to hold both the World Cup and Euros titles consecutively.

Spain Seeks First Euros Title Under Tome

Tome is not concerned about pressure as they approach the final. "I don't think about pressure," she told reporters. "We've been writing history throughout this tournament—reaching the semis and finals for the first time, beating Germany for the first time." She emphasised that their primary goal was to play six games, which they have accomplished.

Spain enters the final with an impressive record of ten consecutive victories across all competitions, scoring 38 goals during this run. Their last longer winning streak was between March 2020 and November 2021 when they won 16 matches in a row.

The upcoming match will be a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final, where Spain triumphed over England with a score of 1-0. This marks only the second instance of back-to-back World Cup/Euro finals featuring identical teams, following Germany versus Sweden (Euro 2001 and World Cup 2003), both won by Germany.

Expectations for the Final

Despite being favourites at the start of the tournament, Spain faces a tough challenge against defending champions England. The Opta supercomputer gives Spain a slight edge with a 37.8% chance of winning within regular time compared to England's 35.3%. The likelihood of extra time stands at 26.9%, while Spain's overall chance of securing victory is estimated at 51%.

However, Irene Paredes does not see Spain as having an advantage over England. "I don't assume that since day one [Spain were favourites]," Paredes said. She acknowledged that both teams deserve their place in the final and stressed that they are focused on enjoying their sixth game.

Paredes highlighted that Spain does not view themselves as favourites but rather sees this as an opportunity to continue making history. "We know what it takes to be here," she stated, emphasising their experience in handling high-pressure situations and important tournaments.

As anticipation builds for Sunday's match, both teams are prepared for a competitive encounter. The outcome will determine whether Spain can add another historic achievement to their recent successes or if England will defend their title successfully.
