Luis de la Fuente remains unfazed by Spain's 0-0 draw with Serbia in their opening Nations League match, likening it to a pre-season game. Despite being European champions, Spain found it challenging to penetrate Serbia's solid defence. Lamine Yamal had two significant chances in the second half but failed to convert.
Throughout the match, La Roja managed 21 shots and created 1.39 expected goals (xG). However, they only tested Serbian goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic five times, who successfully maintained his clean sheet. De la Fuente stressed that there was no need for concern despite the lacklustre start to their Nations League campaign.

"We lacked mostly everything in the first half," said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente. "In the second half, we were better and much improved but lacked effectively up front." He noted that players were tired due to the heat and busy schedule. "I'm not worried; it's almost a pre-season game for us due to the circumstances," he added.
De la Fuente fielded nearly the same team that won the Euro 2024 final, with only Rodri and Alvaro Morata absent from Thursday's line-up. He suggested that the extended tournament might have impacted their performance, as players had limited game time before returning to international duties.
The coach highlighted that at this stage of the season, some players have more game time than others. "In October, when they have accumulated more games, we will talk about other things," De la Fuente explained. He acknowledged that September is a tough period due to a lack of rhythm and recovery difficulties.
Spain's next Nations League fixture in Group A4 is an away match against Switzerland on Sunday. De la Fuente emphasised Serbia's defensive energy and admitted Spain lacked accuracy during the game.
"We have to value Serbia," De la Fuente said, acknowledging their strong defensive performance. He reiterated that Spain's lack of precision was a key factor in their inability to score.
Despite these challenges, De la Fuente remains optimistic about moving forward. "It's a process, and we will move forward," he stated confidently.
