Luciano Spalletti acknowledged his tenure as Italy's manager did not significantly impact the team. Despite securing a 2-0 victory over Moldova, he admitted the performance was challenging. This match marked his 24th and final game in charge after announcing his departure in a pre-match press conference. Italy had previously suffered a 3-0 loss to Norway in their UEFA qualifying opener.
Spalletti took over from Roberto Mancini in August 2023, following Mancini's unexpected resignation. Before this role, Spalletti led Napoli to a Serie A title earlier that year. His time with Italy saw mixed results, including a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign where they exited at the last-16 stage against Switzerland. Under his leadership, Italy won 12 out of 24 matches, averaging 1.75 points per match.

The match against Moldova saw Giacomo Raspadori and Andrea Cambiaso score, securing a win despite difficulties. Ion Nicolaescu's early goal for Moldova was disallowed due to offside after a VAR review. Sergiu Clescenco's side posed threats throughout, but Italy's superior finishing made the difference. The Azzurri recorded an expected goals (xG) total of 2.63 from 28 shots compared to Moldova's 1.33 from seven attempts.
"It's true, we struggled tonight too," Spalletti told RAI Sport, explaining that numerous factors contributed to the team's challenges. He noted that maintaining the group was difficult due to fatigue at this season stage. "Perhaps seeking someone in better physical shape might've helped," he added, highlighting the toll the campaign took on all players.
The timing of their first game against Norway in Oslo was unfortunate, occurring right at season's end when players were not at peak fitness. Spalletti expressed optimism that by September, the team would be in better condition for future matches. The search for a new manager is underway as Italy prepares for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Spalletti remarked on leaving without generating enthusiasm for his successor despite fan support: "The coach has to make the difference... unfortunately I did not make the difference." His candid reflection underscores the challenges faced during his tenure and sets expectations for future leadership.
