Spalletti Frustrated As Juventus Win Highlights Recurrent Finish-Game Mistakes

Luciano Spalletti praised the result yet criticised Juventus after the 1-0 Serie A win at Lecce, arguing the performance did not reflect the control shown. The head coach felt Juventus again failed to finish chances, even though the victory strengthened Champions League qualification hopes.

Spalletti described a recurring pattern this season where Juventus start strongly but leave matches open. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Spalletti said: "Weve been saying for a while that we keep doing this, we score early and then dont finish the games off, its like a cut and paste of previous mistakes."

Spalletti criticises Juve's late-game finish

Dusan Vlahovic decided the contest almost immediately, scoring after just 12 seconds. That strike is the fastest by any Juventus player in the Serie A three-points-per-win era, which began in 1994-95, beating Arturo Vidal’s goal against Inter from November 2012 that arrived after 18 seconds.

Juventus controlled territory and chances against Lecce but created anxiety by not extending the lead. Juventus produced 2.16 expected goals from 15 attempts, with 14 efforts taken inside the penalty area. Lecce created little, yet the narrow margin meant any late mistake could have changed the result.

Recent league form under Spalletti remains strong despite the coach’s concerns. Juventus have collected 22 points from the last 10 Serie A matchdays, with six wins and four defeats. Juventus have also recorded four straight away clean sheets in Serie A, the best such sequence since the period between October 2022 and January 2023.

Spalletti highlighted how Juventus allow uncertainty to grow during matches. Spalletti said: "We dominate whole areas of games, it seems like we are in total control, and then there are moments of superficiality where we lose our way, misplace passes that are just incredible for the level of football we are playing at. We cannot seem to maintain that concentration, determination and grit for the whole game."

The Juventus coach also described how those lapses affect players mentally during tight Serie A contests. Spalletti said: "Once we make those mistakes, the tension and fear sets in, the match goes back into the balance. Then we get annoyed with ourselves, go and grab the game by the scruff of the neck and put it back on track."

Spalletti felt the scoreline did not match Juventus control. Spalletti said: "A game like this one cannot end 1-0, we barely allowed them to get into our half, there were so many situations where we had two attacking options and always went for the third worst one. Thats just what we are like." The win keeps Juventus well positioned in Serie A, yet Spalletti continues to demand more ruthless finishing.
