Sporting CP Clinches Primeira Liga Title With Dramatic Win Over Vitoria Guimaraes

Sporting CP secured the Primeira Liga title after defeating Vitoria Guimaraes 2-0. Pedro Goncalves and Viktor Gyokeres scored to ensure Sporting finished ahead of Benfica by two points.

Sporting CP clinched the Primeira Liga title after defeating Vitoria Guimaraes 2-0. This victory at Estadio Jose Alvalade marked Sporting's 21st league triumph. Pedro Goncalves and Viktor Gyokeres scored in the second half, ensuring Sporting's third championship in five years. Vitoria Guimaraes struggled to threaten, failing to register a shot on target, allowing Rui Borges' team to secure a comfortable win.

Sporting finished the season with 82 points, narrowly edging out Benfica by two points. Benfica managed only a 1-1 draw against Sporting Braga, who played with ten men. The Lisbon rivals had previously drawn 1-1, but Sporting's earlier win over Benfica in December gave them the head-to-head advantage needed for the title.

Sporting CP Wins Primeira Liga Title

Viktor Gyokeres was instrumental in Sporting's success, scoring 39 goals in 33 league matches. His performance was a significant improvement from last season when he netted 29 goals. Gyokeres' tally this season was unmatched, with Samu Omorodion trailing by 20 goals. Sporting's expected goals (xG) of 2.18 against Vitoria Guimaraes highlighted their dominance.

Benfica's campaign ended as runners-up despite scoring in 32 of their 34 matches, more than any other team this season. However, they couldn't capitalise on opportunities against Braga, reflected in their xG of 1.34 compared to Braga's higher xG of 1.89.

The upcoming Portuguese Cup final will see Sporting and Benfica face off again next Sunday. Sporting aims for a domestic double while Benfica seeks redemption with a trophy win to salvage their season.

In their simultaneous match against Braga, Benfica fell behind when Rodrigo Zalazar converted a penalty after Tomas Araujo fouled Ricardo Horta. Although Angel Di Maria assisted Vangelis Pavlidis for an equaliser, Joao Moutinho’s red card for Braga didn't help Benfica secure the win they needed.

Sporting's title defence is notable as it's their first successful one since winning four consecutive titles between 1951 and 1954. Their consistent performance throughout the season has been pivotal in securing this achievement.
