Sporting CP have dismissed Joao Pereira as head coach after only eight matches, appointing Rui Borges as his successor. Pereira took over on 11 November, following Ruben Amorim's departure to Manchester United. Under Amorim, Sporting had a flawless start in the Primeira Liga, winning their first 11 games and remaining unbeaten in the Champions League with three wins and one draw.
Borges, who recently left Vitoria Guimaraes after seven months, will now lead Sporting CP. At Vitoria, he achieved an 18-win record out of 30 matches, boasting a 60% win rate. In the Primeira Liga, he averaged 1.53 points per game over 15 matches. His leadership also saw Vitoria remain unbeaten in the Europa Conference League.

Pereira's tenure at Sporting began promisingly with a 6-0 victory over Amarante FC in the Taca de Portugal third round. However, subsequent performances were less impressive, with only two more wins secured. The team faced consecutive defeats in the Champions League and dropped to second place in the Portuguese league, trailing Benfica by one point during the Christmas break.
Borges expressed enthusiasm about his new role at Sporting CP. "The time for me is right. It's always right," he told reporters. "I'm very positive; I believe things happen when they have to." He added that leading the Portuguese champions is a dream come true and praised the squad as being exceptional.
His first challenge will be against league leaders Benfica on Sunday. Borges emphasised that it is not yet time to discuss new signings as he focuses on assessing the current team dynamics.
