Sporting CP's captain, Morten Hjulmand, expressed confidence in the team's ability to perform without their head coach, Ruben Amorim. Amorim is set to join Manchester United on November 11, with a contract lasting until the end of the 2026-27 season. Sporting has had an excellent start this season, leading the league and remaining unbeaten in the Champions League.
Despite Amorim's departure, Hjulmand remains optimistic about the future challenges. "Winning the championship remains the goal," he stated before their Champions League match against Manchester City. He acknowledged that it was tough knowing Amorim would leave but recognised such opportunities are part of football.

During his four-and-a-half years at Sporting, Amorim led them to two Primeira Liga titles and managed 156 league games, more than any other coach in the club's history. According to Opta's records, he holds the best win ratio for a Sporting coach, winning 120 matches in Portugal's top division.
Hjulmand joined Sporting in August 2023 from Lecce under Amorim's guidance. He admitted feeling sad about Amorim's departure but believes he will excel at Manchester United. "Ruben was one of the reasons why I came to Sporting," Hjulmand added.
The captain emphasised how crucial it was to understand Amorim’s vision for football and team dynamics. This understanding helped players know their roles and contributions within the team. "It's a very important image for the player," Hjulmand noted.
He praised Amorim’s unique approach to managing players both on and off the field. "The way he sees the players... It's something I've never seen in my career," Hjulmand remarked. He expressed confidence that Manchester United would benefit from Amorim’s leadership.
Sporting is prepared for life after Amorim with a new coach they trust. "We are resigned that Ruben will leave; we will have a good coach," said Hjulmand. The fans also support this transition as they continue their pursuit of winning the championship.
The team is determined to maintain its momentum and achieve its goals despite changes in leadership. With strong belief in their new coach and continued support from fans, Sporting aims to demonstrate resilience and success on the field.
