Sporting CP have secured a new forward by signing Colombia's Luis Suarez from Almeria for 25 million euros. This move follows the sale of Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal. Gyokeres, who joined Sporting two years ago for 20 million euros, was sold for a total of 72.6 million euros after an impressive stint.
Gyokeres made a significant impact at Sporting, scoring 39 goals in 33 Primeira Liga matches last season. The previous year, he netted 29 times. His total of 68 league goals over two seasons surpassed any player in Europe's top five leagues during that period.

To replace Gyokeres, Sporting turned to Suarez, who scored 27 goals for Almeria in the Segunda Division last season. These goals came from an expected goals (xG) tally of 25.83, and he converted 40% of his big chances, scoring 18 out of 45 opportunities.
Almeria decided to sell Suarez after losing to Real Oviedo in the play-offs. Suarez has earned five senior caps for Colombia and has now signed a five-year contract with Sporting. His deal reportedly includes an 80 million euro release clause.
Before joining Sporting, Suarez was with Watford from 2017 to 2021 but did not play in either the Premier League or Championship. He later moved to Marseille, where he scored three times in seven Ligue 1 appearances during the 2022-23 season.
This acquisition marks a strategic move by Sporting CP as they aim to maintain their competitive edge following Gyokeres' departure. With Suarez's proven goal-scoring ability, Sporting hopes to continue their success in domestic and European competitions.
