Spurs agree deal with PSG star Serge Aurier

New Delhi, Aug 27: North London giants Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to terms to sign Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain for £23.1 million but have to wait for the ongoing legal issues related to a two-month prison sentence the defender received before making the deal official.

It is understood the 24-year-old defender has completed a medical ahead of a transfer worth £23m, but the move is still being held up by issues surrounding his right to enter the United Kingdom.

The Ivorian was given a two-month suspended jail sentence last year for assaulting a police officer and was not allowed into the country to play for PSG in their Champions League clash with Arsenal - he has since appealed against that sentence and is still awaiting the result.

Aurier has played his entire professional career in France, joining PSG in the summer of 2015 after starting his career with Lens and then moving on to Toulouse. Over the years, he has been quite a solid player at right-back with excellent overall ability to defend and attack and could be an ideal replacement for Kyle Walker who left Spurs for Manchester City.

Aurier has been put up for sale by PSG, who have signed Dani Alves in his right-back position and also have Thomas Meunier, with the French club believing the Ivory Coast international needs a fresh start to his career.

PSG also have to sell players to satisfy the demands of Financial Fair Play following the world record £198m signing of Neymar.

Chelsea had considered making a move for Aurier but Spurs have agreed a deal although there is a complication over the 24-year-old’s appeal against the suspended sentence he received after he allegedly assaulted a police officer outside a nightclub in Paris.

Spurs have signed Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez so far this summer and are expected to make a few more signings after making Aurier officially a Tottenham player.
