London, Aug 19: Things are not going well for Tottenham Hotspurs this summer at all and there is another bad news for the fans as star defender Toby Alderweireld has reportedly turned down a contract extension.
Spurs have already lost Kyle Walker to Manchester City this summer and another full-back Danny Rose has publicly criticised the club for not paying enough. Now Alderweireld rejecting a new contract should be an eye-opener for Daniel Levy.
The North London side had the meanest defence in the Premier League in the past two seasons, in which played a major role was played by the Belgian stopper.
Alderweireld is a critical member of that Tottenham team, with his partnership with Belgium international compatriot Jan Vertonghen the foundation on which Mauricio Pochettino's team is built.
Spurs have been successful in tying down the majority of their key players to new contracts over the last 12 months, but the powerhouse centre-half is one that has resisted an extension just like his teammate Christian Eriksen.
Alderweireld has just two years remaining on his contract and this leaves Tottenham in a slightly uncomfortable position if terms cannot be agreed between the two parties.
The report suggests that Manchester City are major suitors of the former Ajax star, while the defender wants to become one of the club's top earners if he is to commit to Spurs.
It suggests that club captain Hugo Lloris and superstar striker Harry Kane are paid £110,000 per week and that Alderweireld wants his wages to match this figure.
Given that the 28-year-old is widely considered among the best defenders in the Premier League, his demands are hardly unreasonable.
Daniel Levy has put in place a wage structure to keep the club profitable, but must evaluate his strategy once again if the club has to keep their star players and challenge for the big prize that is the Premier League.
