Steve Clarke Signs New Scotland Contract Through 2030 World Cup

Steve Clarke has agreed a new contract that keeps Clarke as Scotland manager until after the 2030 World Cup. The Scottish Football Association confirmed the extension on 28 May 2026, underlining confidence in Clarke. Scotland now head towards the 2026 World Cup with stability in the technical area and a clear plan stretching across the next international cycle.

Clarke’s side enters the 2026 World Cup with Haiti first in Group C on 13 June, and expectations are rising. Scotland have never reached the World Cup knockout rounds, exiting in the group stage at all eight previous appearances. This squad now carries hope of ending that record after a run of consistent tournament qualifications.

Steve Clarke extends Scotland contract through 2030

When announcing the extension, the Scottish Football Association highlighted Clarke’s impact and the timing before the finals in America. Clarke said: "I am truly honoured to lead my squad into our first men's World Cup in 28 years and I'm proud to continue as head coach. I know the Scotland supporters appreciate the achievements of this group in qualifying for back-to-back Euros, and I'm equally sure the whole nation rejoiced in our qualification for the 2026World Cup after such a long time. It's very important to look ahead and, while my squad will be doing everything in their power to make the country proud in America this summer, it also gives us certainty knowing that we can look to build on those foundations for the long-term. It is a privilege to continue in this role."

Clarke first took charge of the Scotland national team in 2019, following Alex McLeish’s second spell. Since then, Scotland have qualified for Euro 2020, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup. Group-stage elimination followed at both recent European Championships, yet no previous Scotland manager has led the country to three major tournaments.

The scale of Scotland’s tournament record under Steve Clarke is clear when lined up against earlier eras. The team had not played at a men’s World Cup since 1998, and supporters had waited decades for regular appearances at major events. Now Scotland enter consecutive Euros and a World Cup within six years under the same manager.

Tournament Year Stage Reached
Euro 2020 2021 Group stage
Euro 2024 2024 Group stage
World Cup 2026 Qualified

Beyond the World Cup in America, Clarke is set to guide Scotland towards Euro 2028, which will be held across the United Kingdom and Ireland. All five host nations must still progress through qualifying, although two reserve places will go to the highest-ranked hosts who fail. Clarke’s extended contract therefore covers another potential home tournament.

The Scotland national team and Steve Clarke were also praised publicly by the governing body through social media.

The message underlined Clarke’s status in Scotland’s history and reinforced the idea of long-term continuity.

Scotland now move towards the 2026 World Cup and Euro 2028 qualifying with Steve Clarke’s position secured beyond that period. Supporters know the manager who ended the long wait for a World Cup return will also shape the next phase. The agreement gives the squad and staff a settled structure as they chase further progress.
