Steve McClaren has departed his senior first-team role at Manchester United to take on the position of head coach for Jamaica. McClaren, who last managed Queens Park Rangers in the 2018-19 season, has agreed to a two-year contract with the Reggae Boyz.
Heimir Hallgrimsson resigned as Jamaica's head coach last month after a disappointing Copa America performance where the team failed to secure a win. McClaren's primary objective is to lead Jamaica to the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

"I had no hesitation in accepting a position that is ideally suited to me at this stage of my career," said McClaren. "I quickly came to realise the potential that the country possessed. In the years since [working with Jamaica at FIFA], that potential has grown significantly and there is every reason to believe that with continued hard work and development a bright future lies ahead."
The Jamaican Football Federation officially announced McClaren's appointment via their Twitter account on July 31, 2024: "Please help us welcome the New Coach of the Jamaica Senior Men's National Team Mr. Stephen McClaren." pic.twitter.com/UoOeeGWXVw
Before fully committing to his new role, McClaren will oversee Manchester United's international players returning for pre-season training. He will leave once Erik ten Hag and the rest of the squad return from their pre-season tour in the United States.
The 63-year-old previously managed England, taking over from Sven Goran Eriksson in 2006 but was dismissed after failing to qualify for Euro 2008. He rejoined Manchester United in May 2022 as part of Ten Hag's backroom staff.
McClaren's experience and familiarity with international football are expected to benefit Jamaica as they aim for World Cup qualification. His appointment marks a significant step for Jamaican football as they look forward to future successes under his guidance.
