London, August 29: Austrian central defender Kevin Wimmer has passed his medical at Stoke ahead of a £18million move from Tottenham, according to reports in England.

Talks over personal terms are close to conclusion and the deal is expected to be announced in the next 24 hours making the defender Mark Hughes' seventh major signing of the summer transfer window.

Wimmer said goodbye to his Spurs team-mates at Wembley on Sunday (August 27). He became surplus to requirements at Tottenham following the club-record arrival of fellow defender Davinson Sanchez from Ajax.

The 24-year-old, who previously attracted interest from West Brom this summer, failed to cement a regular place for himself in the starting XI at Spurs but played the role of a backup stopper quite well. However, it was high time for him to look for pastures and he could prove to be a solid addition to Stoke City.

The Austria international, who signed a five-year contract at Tottenham in 2015 following his £4.3million arrival from Cologne, made just five Premier League appearances last season.

West Brom, who drew 1-1 with Stoke on Sunday (August 27), had also expressed an interest in Wimmer but Baggies boss Tony Pulis has turned his attention elsewhere in his search for another central defender.

Following the match at The Hawthorns, Hughes said he would like to add to his squad but is looking to move certain players on first before the transfer window closes, with club record signing Giannelli Imbula top of the list that also includes Bojan and Philipp Wollscheid.

Hughes is also hopeful of bringing in a wing-back and a central midfielder ahead of Thursday night's transfer deadline.

Stoke City have signed Darren Fletcher, Josh Tymon, Eric Maxim Chupo-Moting, Kurt Zouma, Jese Rodriguez and Bruno Martins Indi this summer and the arrival of Wimmer would make their defence much stronger.
