Luis Suarez has expressed concerns about Marcelo Bielsa's coaching methods, which he believes have caused division within Uruguay's national team. During the Copa America, Suarez described a negative atmosphere among the players. He retired from international football last month as Uruguay's top scorer with 69 goals and 143 caps, second only to Diego Godin's 161 appearances.
The veteran forward was part of the squad that achieved third place at the Copa America in July, marking their best performance since winning in 2011. However, Suarez revealed that the atmosphere in the United States was far from positive. Bielsa's tactics and approach reportedly led to tension among team members, with some contemplating their future involvement with the national team.

Suarez criticised how midfielder Agustin Canobbio was treated, being used merely as a sparring partner. "I will ask the fans not to take it out on the players when things go wrong," Suarez told DSports. He explained that Bielsa's training style has divided the group and predicted that players might eventually reach their breaking point.
According to Suarez, some teammates confided in him that they intended only to participate in Copa America and nothing beyond. "We all know that he doesn’t like to deal with leaders or players with experience," Suarez said. He chose to remain silent during his time with the team out of respect for coexistence and did not want to contribute to any problems.
Suarez also highlighted issues regarding player treatment during training sessions. A player selected for Copa America should not be treated as a mere 'sparring' partner, he argued. "It's annoying," he said, expressing understanding and support for Agustin Canobbio, who had been holding back his frustrations.
Suarez mentioned that staff were restricted from interacting freely with players, including simple gestures like greeting them or sharing meals. Many players even held a meeting requesting Bielsa at least say "good morning." The lack of communication deeply affected Suarez, who expressed sadness over what the national team is experiencing.
The situation within Uruguay's camp highlights significant challenges under Bielsa’s leadership style. As tensions rise among players due to these methods, it remains uncertain how this will impact future performances and team dynamics moving forward.
