Leah Williamson Emphasises Success As A Constant Driver For England In Euro 2025

Leah Williamson discusses the Lionesses' relentless pursuit of success as they prepare for Euro 2025. Following impressive performances, England aims to build on their past triumphs and secure more silverware.

England's women's football team is determined to achieve success at Euro 2025, according to captain Leah Williamson. The Lionesses, who claimed the European title by defeating Germany at Wembley in 2022, are set to face Sweden in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Despite a 2-1 loss to France in their opening match, England bounced back with decisive victories over the Netherlands and Wales.

Williamson, who missed the 2023 World Cup final due to injury, is eager for more triumphs. "I think it drives us because of the mentality of the team and we're all in the same boat," she said. "The team in 2022 was special to go on that journey with and I'll be forever proud to have been part of that squad, but we don't want it to be the only one. So naturally, [success] is a constant driver."

Williamson Highlights England's Drive for Success

Both England and Sweden recorded an expected goals figure of 9.34 during the group stage, leading all teams. Spain scored more goals than England's 11, with France matching that tally. Eight different players scored for England in this phase, a feat surpassed only by their Euro 2022 performance when nine players scored.

Sweden has won all three of their Euro 2025 matches so far but has never achieved four consecutive wins in this competition before. They have won six out of their last seven matches in the tournament, except for a 4-0 defeat against England in the Euro 2022 semi-finals.

"You want to do more, you always want to do more," Williamson added. "I'd like to say that on that day [in the final against Germany] I felt as happy as I ever felt and that probably would've been enough for me. But it creeps around and everybody wants more all the time."

Quarter-Final Success

England has advanced from each of their five quarter-final appearances at major tournaments since the 2015 Women's World Cup. This achievement marks the longest such streak by a European nation. Opta's supercomputer predicts England as favourites with a 49.4% chance of reaching the semi-finals.

The drive for excellence remains strong among England's players as they aim for further glory. Their past successes fuel their ambition to continue achieving at high levels while maintaining a winning mindset throughout their journey.
