Sunderland Maintains Lead With Fourth Win, Oxford's Comeback Triumph

Sunderland beats Portsmouth 3-1 in the Championship, marking their fourth win. Oxford United overcomes Preston North End with a 3-1 victory after a comeback.

Sunderland maintained their flawless start to the season with a 3-1 win over Portsmouth at Fratton Park, marking their fourth consecutive Championship victory. The visitors took the lead 31 minutes into the game due to an own goal by Zak Swanson, who was unfortunate as Jordan Williams' clearance rebounded off him into the net.

Alan Browne, a Republic of Ireland international, doubled Sunderland's lead six minutes into the second half. This was Browne's first goal since joining Sunderland during the summer transfer window. Romaine Mundle then made it 3-0 in the 56th minute, effectively ending the contest.

Sunderland and Oxford Secure Wins

Portsmouth made four substitutions on the hour mark, including introducing deadline-day signing Mark O'Mahoney. However, these changes did not alter the course of the match. Portsmouth managed just one shot on target before Luke O'Nien's stoppage-time own goal gave them a consolation.

Oxford United also had a successful outing as they came from behind to defeat Preston North End 3-1 at Kassam Stadium. This marked Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom's first defeat since taking over earlier this month after Ryan Lowe was sacked.

Preston started strong with Emil Riis Jakobsen scoring just three minutes into the game. However, Oxford's Mark Harris equalised after 20 minutes with a header, scoring for the fourth consecutive league game. Tyler Goodrham then put Oxford ahead in the second half with a spectacular strike.

The situation worsened for Preston when Liam Lindsay received a second booking in the 70th minute, reducing them to ten men. Greg Leigh sealed Oxford’s victory by scoring a minute later. This win moved Oxford to eighth place in the table.

Leeds United's Steady Climb

Leeds United climbed to fourth place in the standings following a 2-0 win over Hull City at Elland Road. Second-half goals from Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe secured Leeds' back-to-back victories for the first time this season. Hull City remains winless and sits in 19th place.

Millwall secured their first win of the season by defeating Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 at New Den. Josh Coburn scored on his debut for Millwall in the second half, followed by goals from Duncan Watmore and Jake Cooper. Sheffield Wednesday has now suffered three consecutive defeats and is positioned just above Preston in 20th place.

Portsmouth is still searching for their first victory of the campaign and currently sits in 18th place in the table.
