Sunderland 1-0 Tottenham: Mukiele Seals De Zerbi's Difficult Tottenham Debut

Tottenham slipped deeper into Premier League trouble as Roberto De Zerbi’s first match ended in a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland, leaving Spurs 18th. Nordi Mukiele’s second-half strike, diverted in off Micky van de Ven, decided a tight contest at the Stadium of Light and extended Tottenham’s long winless league sequence.

The loss means Spurs remain stuck in the relegation zone with six league fixtures left and no victory in 14 Premier League games. De Zerbi, appointed on a five-year contract during the recent international break, could not inspire an immediate response from a side already short on confidence and form.

Sunderland beat Spurs as Mukiele seals debut

The setback at Sunderland is now Tottenham’s longest winless run in Premier League history, covering 14 matches. Across all league campaigns, it is their second-worst sequence without a victory, behind a 16-game spell that stretched from December 1934 to April 1935, underlining the scale of the current slump.

De Zerbi’s difficult start also continues an unwelcome trend for Premier League Spurs managers. Each of the last two permanent bosses have lost their opening league game in charge, with Igor Tudor beaten by Arsenal in February and De Zerbi following here, after the previous nine managers, including caretakers, had remained unbeaten in their first league match.

Spurs actually began with purpose at the Stadium of Light, yet Sunderland handled that early pressure well and then created the clearer chances. Brian Brobbey nodded an Enzo Le Fee chipped delivery over, and Granit Xhaka dragged a shot wide as the hosts began to threaten more regularly before the interval.

First-half stoppage time produced two major openings at either end. Stand-in Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky blocked Brobbey’s close-range attempt, keeping the scores level. Almost immediately, Spurs forward Dominic Solanke met a chance inside the Sunderland box, but Robin Roefs reacted sharply to deny Solanke and preserve parity at the break.

Premier League key moments for Spurs Tottenham and Sunderland

The decisive passage came in the 61st minute when Mukiele surged forward from the right side for Sunderland. Mukiele’s shot took a heavy deflection off van de Ven, wrong-footed Kinsky and rolled into the net, leaving the Tottenham goalkeeper stranded and giving the home side a lead that never looked secure but ultimately held.

A worrying incident followed as Cristian Romero collided with Kinsky. Romero departed in tears, while Kinsky required a bandage to continue. Tottenham pushed forward during the closing stages but did not find a clear late chance, and the final whistle confirmed another Premier League defeat for Spurs without a single reply.

Premier League statistics for struggling Spurs Tottenham against Sunderland

Tottenham’s problems extend beyond this single defeat, especially when falling behind. Spurs are one of only two Premier League teams this season, along with Wolves, who have not managed a win after conceding first, reflecting serious issues when attempting to recover games once the opponent scores.

Across 23 Premier League matches in which Spurs have trailed, they have suffered 16 defeats and drawn the other seven, with no comebacks. For Sunderland, the win carried extra weight, as this was the club’s first Premier League victory over Tottenham since 3 April 2010, ending a 15-game run without beating Spurs in the competition.

The outcome leaves De Zerbi facing immediate pressure as Tottenham enter the final six league fixtures still in the relegation places. Sunderland gain momentum from a rare Premier League success against Spurs, while Tottenham must halt the extended slump quickly to avoid further damage during a tense run-in.
