Sunderland's head coach, Regis Le Bris, commended his team for their resilience against Portsmouth in a 1-0 win. This victory brought Sunderland closer to the top of the Championship standings. Wilson Isidor netted his eighth goal of the season early on, capitalising on Eliezer Mayenda's pass to beat the offside trap and score.
Sunderland dominated the match with 24 shots, achieving an expected goals (xG) value of 1.98. In contrast, Portsmouth managed only six shots with a mere 0.36 xG. Sunderland also had more than twice as many touches inside the penalty area compared to Portsmouth, recording 39 touches to Portsmouth's 14.

The game saw Sunderland miss several opportunities to increase their lead, especially in freezing conditions at the Stadium of Light. Mayenda squandered a clear chance just before half-time. The task was made easier when Portsmouth's captain, Marlon Pack, received a red card for a late challenge on Isidor.
This win moved Sunderland within three points of Leeds United, who lead the Championship table. They are also just two points behind Burnley and Sheffield United, who occupy second and third places respectively.
"It was important to win because it's tough to get results in this league," Le Bris told BBC Sport after the match. "Especially during a demanding festive period like this, with five games in 15 days."
Le Bris acknowledged that Sunderland struggled initially against Portsmouth's direct style of play but improved in the second half. "We struggled to deal with their direct style of play in the first half and didn't win enough first contacts," he said. "But the second half was better."
The coach highlighted that despite scoring early, failing to secure a second goal kept them under pressure until the final whistle. He emphasised consistency as key: "This league is tough, but we've been consistent, and that's the key message today."
