Sunderland's recent 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday has reignited their hopes for a top-two finish in the Championship. Eliezer Mayenda was instrumental, scoring twice to help Sunderland recover from losses to Leeds United and Hull City. This win places them just five points behind Sheffield United, who are currently in second place.
Controversy arose with Sunderland's first goal when Mayenda appeared to use his arm to control Leo Hjelde's long ball before scoring past James Beadle. Despite protests from Sheffield Wednesday, referee William Finnie allowed the goal. Callum Paterson quickly equalised with a header two minutes into the second half.

Sunderland regained their lead in the 71st minute when Trai Hume's precise cross found Mayenda, who headed it home for his second goal of the match. This marked Mayenda's second brace against Wednesday this season. Although Sunderland's expected goals (xG) were 1.05 compared to their opponents' 1.13, they managed to secure all three points at Hillsborough.
Regis Le Bris praised his team's resilience after the match, stating that their character was crucial in overcoming challenges on a difficult pitch. "Important win after two defeats, on a difficult pitch, but that was the case for both teams," Le Bris said. He emphasised that while the quality of play wasn't always impressive, the team's determination and energy were evident.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Rohl expressed frustration over the decision to allow Mayenda's controversial opener, which he felt significantly influenced the match outcome. The loss marked Wednesday's third consecutive defeat in the Championship since August 2024, dropping them to 13th place in the table.
"I must say again, we played a fantastic game again against a strong side," Rohl commented. He acknowledged that conceding two easy goals and facing unfavourable decisions affected their performance. Despite these setbacks, Rohl remains focused on improving his team's basics and maintaining their dynamic play.
Rohl noted that if they continue performing well in their remaining 11 games, they have a significant opportunity to achieve positive results. "The ball possession and how we created chances was good to see; it was the dynamic, the front-foot defending; we were brave in a lot of moments," he added.
Sunderland's victory highlights their ability to bounce back from setbacks and maintain pressure on those above them in the standings. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday will need to address defensive issues as they aim to climb higher in the league table.
