Sunderland Edges Sheffield United In Thrilling Championship Match; Middlesbrough Claims Late Win

In a thrilling Championship encounter, Sunderland defeated Sheffield United 2-1, keeping their promotion hopes alive. Meanwhile, Middlesbrough secured a dramatic late victory over Hull City to climb the table.

Sunderland secured a vital 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in an intense Championship match, keeping them close to the automatic promotion spots. Kieffer Moore's early penalty miss for the Blades proved costly as Eliezer Mayenda capitalised on Jack Robinson's error to give Sunderland the lead. This goal triggered a frantic period at the Stadium of Light.

Luke O'Nien inadvertently levelled the score with an own goal, but Wilson Isidor restored Sunderland's advantage in the 35th minute. Isidor skilfully bypassed Anel Ahmedhodzic and curled a shot into the far-right corner. Despite Sheffield United having more possession after halftime, they couldn't equalise. Rhian Brewster missed a chance, and Sunderland survived a late scare.

Sunderland and Middlesbrough Secure Key Wins

Sunderland's win keeps them fourth in the table, just two points behind second-placed Burnley. Sheffield United, who were three points clear at Christmas, now trail leaders Leeds by three points. Sunderland have scored 116 league goals on New Year's Day, only behind Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United in Football League history.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough clinched a dramatic late win against Hull City at MKM Stadium. Alex Gilbert scored in stoppage time to secure victory for Boro, who were heading for their fourth straight draw. Delano Burgzorg set up Gilbert after racing down the left flank.

The first half saw limited action with just two shots on target. Hayden Hackney came closest to scoring when his shot hit the post after halftime. Finn Azaz and Burgzorg also threatened Hull's defence before Middlesbrough finally broke through to start 2025 in fifth place.

Middlesbrough completed a league double over Hull for the second time in three seasons, having also beaten them home and away in 2022-23. Despite showing improvement under new head coach Ruben Selles, Hull remains in the bottom three.

This victory marks an important step for both Sunderland and Middlesbrough as they aim for promotion. The Championship race continues to heat up with every matchday proving crucial for teams chasing top spots.
