Sunderland have secured Omar Alderete from Getafe for a fee of 10 million (11.5 million). This acquisition marks Sunderland's 11th signing this summer. The Paraguayan defender has signed a four-year contract with the club. Alderete played 99 matches for Getafe over four seasons, including 36 appearances last season. His defensive skills helped Getafe concede only 39 goals, ranking them fourth in LaLiga for fewest goals allowed.
The 28-year-old began his professional journey at Cerro Porteno in Paraguay before moving to Europe in 2019. He has since played for Basel, Hertha Berlin, and Valencia. His experience across these clubs has honed his defensive abilities, making him a valuable addition to Sunderland's squad.

Alderete expressed his excitement about joining Sunderland, stating: "I'm feeling great about signing for this great team, so I'm really happy. I'm looking forward to my first experience in the Premier League. It's a great challenge for me. I know it's a historic club, and when they told me there was an opportunity, I was excited about coming here. It's always important to have the support of the people, and I'm going to give it my all on the pitch."
Alderete might make his debut against West Ham on Saturday if international clearance is granted in time. His arrival is anticipated to strengthen Sunderland's defence as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League challenges.
During his tenure at Getafe, Alderete was pivotal in maintaining a solid defence despite the team's overall mid-table finish at 13th place. His consistent performances were crucial in achieving their defensive record.
