Sunil Chhetri admits feeling ‘A Little Jealous’ watching India’s Brazil, Uruguay opportunity

Former India captain Sunil Chhetri has admitted that he feels a sense of envy watching the current generation of Indian footballers prepare for an opportunity he never experienced during his long international career.

Chhetri, who has been one of the defining figures of Indian football for more than two decades, expressed his excitement ahead of India's high-profile fixtures against Brazil and Uruguay. However, watching the games as a spectator has also left the veteran striker feeling slightly jealous.

"I feel a little jealous as a spectator," Sunil Chhetri said. "In my 24-26 years as a professional and nearly 20 years with the national team, I never got an opportunity like this."

India will take on Panama on September 26 in Bengaluru before facing Brazil on October 3 and Uruguay on October 6 in Kolkata. Chhetri believes the current squad must embrace the occasion, remain fit and compete with determination against the heavyweight opponents.

The former captain was also asked about team selection and the absence of certain players. Chhetri backed the coaching staff, insisting that the head coach understands what the team needs and should be trusted with selection decisions.

"The coach has to answer that. I'm just a fan now, watching like everyone else," he said.

Chhetri also dismissed any suggestion of a comeback with a touch of humour when asked whether he could return to the pitch.

"I just trained for 20 minutes. I'm around 42 now, I can barely run properly and I'm struggling," he joked.

Despite no longer being part of the national-team setup, Chhetri remains optimistic about India's young players. He believes this is their moment to establish themselves and make the most of the opportunities coming their way.

"This is their time. There are so many talented youngsters in the team. Everyone gets their opportunity; just like I got mine 20 years ago," he added.
