Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri has announced his return to international football, just months after bidding an emotional farewell to the national team in June 2024.
The decision follows discussions with India's head coach Manolo Marquez, who convinced the veteran striker to don the blue jersey once again for the crucial FIFA International Window in March 2025.

Chhetri, India's all-time leading goal-scorer, has been named in the 26-member squad for upcoming matches, including a friendly against Maldives on March 19, followed by a high-stakes AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier against Bangladesh on March 25. Both fixtures are set to take place in Shillong, marking an important phase in India's football calendar.
Marquez emphasized Chhetri's role in the team's ambitions, stating, "The qualification for the Asian Cup is of utmost importance. Given the significance of these matches, I had a conversation with Sunil about making a return to strengthen the team. He agreed, and we are delighted to have him back."
Chhetri's return brings a major boost to the Blue Tigers, not only in terms of experience but also leadership, as they aim for a strong start in their qualifying campaign. The 39-year-old, who has netted 94 goals in international football, remains one of the most prolific strikers in the game. His presence will be instrumental in guiding a young Indian squad through these critical fixtures.
India's squad for the March FIFA Window features a mix of seasoned campaigners and emerging talents. With Amrinder Singh, Gurmeet Singh, and Vishal Kaith guarding the posts, the defense will rely on stalwarts like Sandesh Jhingan, Rahul Bheke, and Subhasish Bose. The midfield sees creative forces in Brandon Fernandes and Jeakson Singh, while Chhetri will lead the attacking front alongside Lallianzuala Chhangte and Manvir Singh.
India's campaign begins with the Maldives friendly, serving as a crucial preparation game before the must-win Asia Cup qualifier against Bangladesh. With Chhetri back in action, Indian fans will be hoping for a strong performance as the team eyes continental qualification once again.
